Swimming in Deer

By Mike Johnson

Be careful what you wish for.

When I was a district manager for 7-Eleven, I spent copious numbers of hours driving from store to store. During all those trips, I kept an eye out for deer. Over ten years and tens of thousands of miles, I saw exactly ONE deer. Southwest Florida isn’t exactly known as deer territory.

Thanks to vacations to Yellowstone and backpacking trips as a teenager, I’d long dreamed of moving to the mountains of Wyoming. I knew there was no shortage of deer there.

The dream was amplified by a visit to Yellowstone via motor home in 1991. I'd won a 7-Eleven incentive contest that paid $5,000 in travel vouchers.

We stopped for gas in the Wapiti Valley, just west of Cody, Wyoming. I clicked the pump handle to auto-pour and Margie & I strolled behind the RV to admire the snowcapped, 360-degree mountains surrounding our location. Her gaze stopped on a Century 21 sign planted in a field across the road. Her eyes grew round.

“Mike! You can BUY This! What are we doing in Florida?”

It took us five, turbulent years to rearrange our lives to make the move to Wyoming.

The state was as wonderful as we imagined. For the first 12 years, we lived in the small town of Cody. In 2008, as we approached early retirement, we purchased our dream home in the mountains between Cody and Yellowstone.

Where did the home happen to be located?

In the Wapiti Valley, 1,400 feet higher in elevation than that old gas station where Margie made her exclamation!

Today, our living room window is filled with that spectacular view that had so enchanted us, decades ago when we were just visitors, trapped in that other life.

As a bonus, the log home came with herds of deer that live right on the property. For six months over winter, 30 to 50 Mule Deer live, graze and breed right in our yard. When the snows come and bury their food supply, it’s impossible to avoid feeding them. This of course, builds their trust, so when they see us, they walk right up. The braver ones eat out of our cups and accept our petting as they devour the alfalfa pellets and mixed hay. We’re especially popular now, in the midst of the worst winter here in 73 years.

In May, the deer head back to higher elevations in the national forest to birth babies and enjoy abundant food sources. In November, they return to our mountainside along the forest border and introduce us to their new fawns. It’s a welcome homecoming as we recognize favorites from years past.

But there’s a small problem. We can’t step outside without gently shooing the deer away so we can shovel snow, walk the dog or back the truck from the barn. They literally walk right up to us every time we exit the house. We’re literally swimming in deer!

These deer are a prime example of the riches the universe wants to bestow upon us. I truly believe that my decade of vivid imagination, focused on the desire to see deer, told the universe to unleash a torrent of circumstances that first got us to Wyoming, got us to this home, and now has us "swimming in deer."

Imagination, combined with belief, desire and emotion, generates inspired thoughts, empowered feelings and productive actions that cause the manifestation of our desires.

The universe provides the raw energy, our minds design and shape that energy and our physical bodies forge it into three dimensional reality. We are literally manifesting our desires out of thin air. This is true of everything both small and large. Our shoes. Our jobs. Our spouses. Our deer.

One day, those items weren’t in our life. Another day, they are. The deeper our connection to the imagination/design/forge process, the faster our manifestation arrives.

Just yesterday, Margie and I finished watching the new Ghostbusters movie. She didn’t like the construction of the bad, giant ghost at the end of the movie. She said it looked needlessly fake.

We often speak in movie quotes in our house, so I answered with a line from “Galaxy Quest.” “It’s all fake. Our beryllium sphere is wire with plaster around it and our digital conveyor is Christmas tree lights.”

I push “Guide” on the TV remote to see what’s on next and up pops “Galaxy Quest.” I click that channel and sure enough, the movie starts playing seconds before the movie quote I just mentioned!

Coincidence? Synchronicity? Or instant manifestation?

I wanted to give the matter the thought it deserved, but first, I had to go outside and feed my deer.
