Everything Has a Price

“Everything you want in life has a price connected to it.
There’s a price to pay if you want to make things better, a price to pay just for leaving things as they are, a price for everything.”

- Harry Browne

I just paid $450 to have my chimneys swept.
I have the main one cleaned every two years.
The other, every four years.
This was a do-them-both year.

Two guys took 20 minutes total.
Their work was satisfactory and their price reflected great pride.

450 of anything is a large sum.
Especially in dollars.

But NOT cleaning the chimneys carries a higher price.
Worry.

Chimney fires occur when tar and creosote build-up thick enough to catch fire.
There’s a fine line between OK and disaster.
So I err on the side of OK.

As the above quote explains, there is a cost just to leave things alone.
That cost of worry was higher than making things better, so I paid the make-things-better price instead.

But there is also a price to be paid AFTER you pay the price to make things better.
Regret.

After watching the simplicity of the cleaning process, I regret not doing the job myself.
Paying the price of regret is going to push me to pay the price of learning and equipment to clean the chimneys myself.

This will give me total control, the fun of new learning, no worries and hopefully, pride in maintaining clean chimneys without financial expense.

With this perspective, paying that $450 price, transmutes from a large expense, into a wise investment.
